Emma leads family surge
 |
| IN FINE FORM: Emma Follis |
THE Follis family from Dorchester could carry off four trophies in the finals of the Dorset Ladies' Indoor BA championships.
Teenager Emma Follis is through to the singles final and is also in the under-25s while her
mother Barbara has reached the showdown for the Fillies' Cup and has designs on the Knock-out Trophy as well.
Emma - 17 this weekend - produced some excellent results in the national singles earlier this winter and she has continued her form into the county competition where she overcame Pamela Daters 21-18 in the semi-final at Bridport.
Daters surged 12-4 ahead but a full house on the next end gave Emma all the confidence she
needed to take command. The Dorchester youngster moved 17-14 in front and though Daters levelled at 17-apiece Emma virtually sealed matters with a treble.
In the final she meets 2006 champion Kath Desmond who had already qualified by defeating Joan Halliwell at Bournemouth.
Mum Barbara progressed 21-11 in the Fillies' (novices') competition against former county president Carol Swale (Dolphin) who must wonder if she will ever win this trophy having lost two previous finals (one of them to Emma in 2006) and now this semi-final.
Playing on her home carpet Barbara was always in control. She led 5-0 and had advanced to 20-7 when she dropped two doubles before gaining the match-winning shot.
The final will be an all-Dorchester affair as Carol Baker - a losing semi-finalist in 2007 - took the other tie also 21-11 against Trixie Dempsey from Moonfleet 2000.
Barbara's KO Trophy hopes hinge on Dorchester A's semi-final today against Dolphin while the under-25 singles featuring Emma will all be played on the weekend of the finals (April 5-6) at Dorchester. Timetable to be announced after the KO Trophy semi-finals.
The finals could be a vintage occasion for Dorchester as they will be represented too in the two-wood triples after Julie Corbin, Isabelle Addison and Brenda Wakely outgunned Jean Roach, Ann White and Madges Churches of Moonfleet 21-9 in the semi-final.
The other tie saw an upset with Sandy Smith, Margaret Steele and Lyn Howard ousting Frances Hewett, Sue Hosking and Margaret Clapp of Bridport 23-7 at Dolphin.
Former singles champion Howard, however, will miss the final as she is on holiday and Penny Cresswell deputises.
