A RESIDENT who has helped to clean up his community was left counting the cost when yobs targeted his home.

Hundreds of pounds worth of damage was caused when a brick was thrown through a kitchen window at Maurice West's house in Chapelhay, Weymouth.

Mr West, 64, was settling down to watch television when he heard glass shatter.

As well as the window, a set of crystal glasses which were given to Mr West and his wife as a wedding present were smashed. He reckons the total damage could be worth as much as £600.

"I'm still picking up glass days later which is not very nice," Mr West said. "I've got two springer spaniels and I have to keep them out of the kitchen in case they tread on any shards."

He added: "I have no idea who would want to do this.

"It really spooked my wife and to be honest I was a bit shaken up as well.

"I suppose it's just a reflection of the way our society is nowadays."

Mr West, of Trinity Terrace, praised the police for responding promptly and keeping him updated while they investigated.

He has decided to offer a cash reward for information that leads to the arrest of those responsible.

Mr West has worked with others in the area to tidy up Chapelhay Gardens, a haven for drunks and drug addicts.

He said: "It was really overgrown and a few of us went down there and opened it up and made a nice place for families.

"It's not a bad area round here. It has its problems, but so does everywhere else."
