Cyclists are putting on their helmets and readying their bikes for a mammoth challenge

The Sunday Regulars is a group of both experienced cyclists who go out in all weathers and cover large distances every week and more casual members who are looking for a nice ride with an obligatory coffee and cake stop at a café.

The group primarily rides on Sundays and is planning to take on a huge challenge over the duration of 2024 – to cycle 100,000 combined miles to raise money for the Dorset and Somerset Air Ambulance.

The group was founded in September by avid cyclist Andy Jones. He was already organising Sunday cycles in an informal setting but wanted to add structure. The group is based in Weymouth and can cycle as far as West Bay and Poole.

Andy Jones said: "So originally it was a bunch of us who cycled regularly and I used to organise meet-ups every Sunday throughout the year and we thought to make it more formal with a group.

"Our group is more social than it is cycling. It is just going out and having a nice time and then having a nice coffee before heading home.

"For me personally I have always done cycling to stay fit and healthy. Some like to do it from a mental health perspective but I think most people are looking for health, wellbeing and to do something social. We do have a good time."

Now with around 80 members, the group is hoping to do some good.

This will be done by collating information collected by the cycling and running tracking app Strava to give a final total of distance travelled, both individually and as a group.

Mr Jones added: "Provided we each average around 60 miles per week throughout the entire year, it should be achievable.

"The idea was to see if we could get to the moon (238,855 miles) but we didn't have enough people but I reckon we can get 100,000 miles, which is four times around the globe."
