Weymouth Civic Society is inviting nominations for its annual awards.

Applications for two categories are now open which include the 'Traditional Awards' and  the 'New Awards'.

The 'Traditional Awards' cover a range of projects, which may included a good new development, a well-designed new building, a great improvement to an unsightly site, or the restoration of a historic building.

It could also cover other special projects which enhance their setting and respect the local environment.

A number of awards are offered, ranging from the Society’s Annual Award plaque, to letters of appreciation, for lesser but  worthwhile improvements.

Nominated projects should have been completed in the past year and should be within the area of Weymouth, Portland and Chickerell.

The 'New Awards', which were debuted last year,  recognise and celebrate local contributions to civic life in any of the following four fields:

  • Lifestyle – helping local people live life more fully and actively;
  • Heritage – conserving our heritage or engaging people with our history;
  • Arts and Culture – delivering programmes that help us consider and appreciate life, relationships and community;
  • The natural environment – improving habitats to increase the opportunity for nature to thrive.

A spokesperson for the civic society said: "Please send us your suggestions for projects in either of the following two main categories: - the traditional awards, inaugurated in 1979, are made for the best contribution to the built environment; and, starting last year, a whole new category of awards has been added, under the general heading of celebrating local contributions to civic life.

"Last year these new awards went to – respectively - the Tumbledown Farm project, Context One for investigating digs at North Quay and St. Nicholas Street, local arts company ‘b-side’; and Weymouth and Portland Marine Litter Project."

Anyone who would like to make a nomination for the traditional awards for the built environment can get in touch by emailing planning@weymouthcivicsociety.org or writing to the Civic Society Planning Committee, C/o 71 Roman Road, Weymouth, DT3 5JH.

For nominations for the society’s new awards, please email info@weymouthcivicsociety.org, with a paragraph about why you feel they merit recognition.

The deadline for all nominations is 31 March 2024.
